Strategic Networking on LinkedIn: Quality Over Quantity

Mindful Networking: Why You Shouldn’t Accept Every Invitation on LinkedIn

LinkedIn is a powerful tool for professional networking, but its value lies in making the right connections, not merely the most connections. However, it can be tempting to accept every connection request that lands in your inbox, especially when you’re looking to expand your professional network.

The Pitfalls of Indiscriminate Connections

When you accept an invitation on LinkedIn, you’re not merely adding a number to your contact list—you’re essentially vouching for this individual’s credibility within your network. The “degree” feature on LinkedIn means that by connecting with someone, you’re extending your network to include their connections as well. If you’ve accepted an invitation from a less-than-reputable source, they now have the potential to reach out to your contacts using the mutual connection as a point of credibility.

It’s also important to note that not everyone on LinkedIn has your best interests at heart. Some users may have ulterior motives, such as phishing or gaining access to your contacts for unsolicited sales pitches.

Setting Boundaries for Connections

To mitigate these risks, it’s crucial to set boundaries for who can connect with you on LinkedIn. Here’s how:

  • Adjust your settings: LinkedIn allows you to control who can send you connection requests. To do this, go to the ‘Settings & Privacy’ option under your profile dropdown. Then, navigate to the ‘Communications’ tab, click on ‘Who can reach you’, and then adjust ‘Who can send you invitations’ according to your preference.
  • Screen requests: Before accepting a connection request, take the time to review the person’s profile. Look for mutual connections, check their activity on the platform, and consider whether connecting with this person would be beneficial to you.
  • Don’t be afraid to decline: If a connection doesn’t feel right, don’t be afraid to decline it. Quality should always supersede quantity when it comes to your professional network.

Directing Connections to Your Company LinkedIn Page

Another smart way to protect your personal connections is by directing professional contacts to your company page instead. If you haven’t created a LinkedIn company page yet, here are the steps:

  • Click on the ‘Work’ icon in the top right corner of your LinkedIn homepage.
  • Click on ‘Create a Company Page+’.
  • Choose the page type you want to create.
  • Fill out the required fields.
  • Check the verification box to confirm you have the right to act on behalf of that company in the creation of the page.
  • Click ‘Create page’.

A company page allows you to connect with others in a professional capacity without giving them access to your personal connections. It’s a crucial tool in establishing a secure and beneficial online network.

So, while LinkedIn is an essential platform for professional networking, it’s important to prioritize the quality of your connections over the quantity. By being discerning with your connections and taking the appropriate measures to protect your network, you can leverage LinkedIn’s powerful networking capabilities while safeguarding your professional integrity. Don’t let the wolves in.
